Local residents would benefit from direct employment through the civil works (PBCs) funded under the project, while the private sector will participate in new opportunities to inspect vehicles and to participate in long-term PBCs as either subcontractors or contractors’ employees.
The project may have negative impacts especially on women and girls, resulting from both the planned works and the improved connectivity associated with the project design. In some countries, women and girls reported feeling insecure while walking in isolated areas or after dark because of the risk of personal attacks. Local women and girls are often survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), including physical and sexual violence. The increased connectivity will provide opportunities for increased interactions between road users, local residents, and transient construction workers, and these new interactions might translate in an increase in the incidence of commercial sex workers, GBV, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections.
Tuesday 5th March, 2019. Government is undertaking a massive road infrastructure development with support of Sino-Hydro of China. Under this program critical road infrastructure throughout the country shall be rehabilitated/constructed. This was made known by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Attah at the sod cutting ceremony for the rehabilitation of the Gumbihini Area Roads in Tamale. “It is expected that by the time of completion of the Sino Hydro Project every region of our country shall benefit from road infrastructural development” the Minister further stated.
Gumbihini is a low lying area and the absence of properly constructed roads with adequate drainage structures makes most parts of the community inaccessible during the rainy season, oftentimes leading to flooding of the community.
The Hon. Minister stated that in addition to the construction of 5 km of roads within Gumbihini, adequate storm drainage structures shall be provided for the community. This, he noted, shall alleviate the incidence of flooding within the community. The provision of the paved roads within the community shall improve accessibility all year round.
A total of 66.0km of road contracts have been awarded in various towns and district capitals in the Northern Region since 2017 by the Ministry of Roads and Highways. These towns include Tamale, Nalerigu, Gambaga, Walewale, Sagnerigu, Nyankpala and Kpandai.
The projects are targeted at improving mobility needs of the various towns, reduction in the incidence of flooding by providing critical drainage structures and the bridging of communities that were cut off during the rainy season.

In a later development, the Minister for Roads and Highways was enskinned as the Malibu Naa (Development Chief) of the Gumbihini Traditional Area.
